Cigarettes in Hollywood?

Do the cigarette companies pay Hollywood producers to have the actors smoke, or is it more for realism? Sometimes you'd expect the bad guy to smoke, sometimes it's iffy, sometimes it's blatant. How much of it is real, how much propaganda? Some numbers or an article would be appreciated. Thanks.
